Random drug and alcohol testing is a DOT mandate. Safety initiates the need for a random drug and/or alcohol screen for the driver. Every month a new list is created and the driver must comply within the date set by Safety, usually by the end of the month. This information including expirations is also identified on the Intranet under Assets → Driver Overview → Drug and Alcohol. Once Safety notifies the dispatcher, the dispatcher must use the following steps for completion.

  1. Coordinate with the dispatch schedule and driver hours, an appropriate time when the driver will have hours and be on duty to do the random.

    1.  It must be logged on duty by the driver during the test. They should also log driving time to and from the testing site.

    2. Do not tell the driver until the test is to be completed. Driver must go immediately.

    3. Drug tests must be performed when the driver is available for dispatch and on duty – not while on a 34 break or sick leave.

    4. Alcohol tests must be completed either before, during, or directly after performing a safety sensitive function such as driving.

  2. Using this Approved Clinics list, identify a clinic the driver will be nearby for the test.

  3. Open and create a copy of the company's correct authorization form (Online, Frontier, WST).

    1. Do not write on this form. Make a copy and save to your computer or drive to edit.

    2. Online Authorization Form

    3. Frontier Authorization Form

    4. WST Authorization Form

  4. Fill out the following fields, print, and fax to the clinic, the driver, and safety.

    1. Fill out name, SS, DOB, and Address at top

    2. Fill in Type of Test. It will be DOT and either Urine Drug Screen or Breath Alcohol Test.

    3. Category of Drug Testing will be Random

    4. Dispatcher will need to find a clinic close to the driver and fill out the name, address and phone number of the clinic.

    5. Dispatcher signs and dates form

  5. Notify Safety once the driver completes the test

  6. Have the driver send a copy of the Custody and Control form he or she receives at the completion of the test from the clinic to you that you, in turn, forward to safety

Special Notes

After the completion of the test, safety will DPA the driver $25 for the time provided the driver

  1. logs it on duty and

  2. sends the completion form as he is supposed to.

*If a driver refuses to test once notified, that is the same as a failure. This will be recorded to the drug and alcohol clearinghouse and no longer be eligible to drive for the carrier.

Direct any additional question to the safety department if the process is unclear before contacting the driver.
